Introduction

The Winter School in archaeological conservation is a joint intensive program by Masaryk University (PANE, Center of Prehistoric Archaeology of the Near East) and CAMNES (Center for Ancient Mediterranean and Near Easter Studies). The School takes place during the month of January in Florence, Italy, and aims at introducing students to the restoration and conservation practices applied to archaeology. The program combines fundamental conservation techniques with hands-on lab work mainly focusing on ancient ceramic artifacts unearthed at the CAMNES excavation of the Etruscan Necropolis of Pratino in Tuscania and that of Sasso Pinzuto (Upper Latium).

Course details

The MUNI-CAMNES Winter School’s program is held in English language and it is mainly aimed at students in their Bachelor or Master degree years. The program offers well-balanced practical and theoretical content and meets high standards in the facilities, experts and locations involved. Students learn what happens to the finds once they leave their recovery contexts and arrive in the laboratory: here, in the fully equipped CAMNES archaeology laboratory, students experience full hands-on activities. Students in fact are involved in the professional process chain of cleaning, consolidation, restoration, conservation, repointing, documentation, study, and storage of the archaeological ceramic finds.

The program is fully accredited by Masaryk University (9 ECTS credits, upon request) for a total number of 228 contact hours (Theory/Class: 25h., Practice/Laboratory: 115h., Study Time & Writing of Essays: 84h., including Exam: 4h.).

Classes take place from Mondays to Thursdays included

Week 1
  • Orientation; Introduction and description to the course structure
  • Class lectures: Introduction to conservation; Documentation and examination; Tuscania, the archaeological context of the artifacts and the Etruscan civilization
  • Lab work
Week 2
  • Class lectures: Elements of ceramic technology; Data recording and examination; Conservation treatments; The conservation report;

  • Discussion. Format, expectations and any questions regarding the final exam and the personal paper (Lab Conservation Report) will be reviewed

General admission requirements

  • Participants must be at least 18 years of age by the start of the program
  • Participants do not need to be enrolled within a Bachelor or Master degree program

Participants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English
proficiency. Non-native English speakers are required to demonstrate that they have reached a high-intermediate level (B2, according to CEFR) in the English language skills, with certification or other evidence equivalent to the following minimum overall TOEFL iBT score of 87 or higher / IELTS score 5.5. or higher.

  • Participants at the moment of arrival must have a valid medical/travel insurance
  • Proof of tuition payment

General information

The stay in Florence consists of regular attendance at the CAMNES Institute, where the participants follow scheduled daily classes in the school’s premises and around the city (if pertinent) from Monday to Friday included.

The tuition fee includes:

• The entire course for a total of 228 contact hours
• Accommodation in double room in apartment with kitchen
• 9 ECTS Credits
• Course reader
• Access to the CAMNES library
• Lab equipment (materials, tools)

The tuition fee does not include:

• Travels costs to reach Florence (Italy)
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner
• International medical/travel insurance (mandatory)
• Anything else not mentioned
 

Accommodation and Board

Students are hosted in selected apartments in the city center of Florence in a double room, equipped with kitchen and washing machine. The rooms are assigned according to roommate requests, common program and gender. Single rooms are available for an extra cost. Rooms with air conditioning are also available for an extra cost.
